Acharya Maharaj and the sangha marched from the village Sadguwan to Khurjakhera. All the sadhus in the sangha were fatigued as they had been walking without a break. All of a sudden, Acharya Maharaj remarked, “The mind suggests that the body should be given some rest.” All the disciples endorsed the suggestion in one voice and said, “Yes Maharaj! You should rest for a while.” Acharya Maharaj said laughingly, “The mind may well talk of rest, but the soul desires that one should perform the samayik.” And in an instant, Acharya Maharaj was firmly seated in the posture of meditation and was absorbed in the samayik. We were all astonished at this spectacle. The degree of self-discipline demonstrated by Acharya Maharaj through his life style is indeed without a parallel. Khurjakhera (Damon), 1995

As directed by Acharya Maharaj, five or six of us sadhus were returning after observing the chaturmas at Satna. We had not beheld Acharya Maharaj for almost a year and a half. We were eager to have his darshan. As we approached Jabalpur, we got to know that Acharya Maharaj was expected there in a short while. Overjoyed, we set out from Jabalpur toward Bargi to welcome him. We soon had the good fortune of having his darshan on the way. As were proceeding to Jabalpur with him, we informed him of the success of the chaturmas at Satna. We told him that by his grace, we had done all that we were capable of and everything went off very well. The conditions were conducive to spiritual endeavour, good health and study of scriptures. Maharaj heard us patiently and then broke into a laughter. He said, “We all are beneficiaries of the grace of Acharya Gyanasagar Maharaj. It is our duty to dedicate ourselves to the service of Lord Mahaveer's mission and think of universal welfare while striving for our own uplift.” In those moments, one could not help being struck by his reverence, devotion and dedication for his guru. At this point, the other sadhus reminded him that it was the twelfth anniversary of my ordination as a kshullak. At once, he held my hand in his and said with great delight, “Let us go! We have a long way to go on this path of salvation.” His affectionate touch and ambrosial words overwhelmed me.“ Tears welled up in my eyes. Acharya Maharaj never discusses people's plans of arrival, departure and stay. Once, someone remonstrated, “Maharaj you do not even ask your visitors to have a seat. It does not seem proper. This basic etiquette is expected even of a sadhu." Acharya Maharaj heard him with utmost attention and then said with a smile, “Brother, this place does not belong to me. How can I invite anyone to sit here? Likewise, how can I endorse anyone's travel plans? One is bound to use some means of transport, which I have renounced. And then, if a person intends to leave just after the darshan, he would be forced to stay if I ask him to have a seat." What the Acharyas have, in fact, laid down is that a sadhu should welcome a visitor with a joyous countenance, raising his hand in a gesture of benediction. This is enough by way of etiquette. This is the courtesy that behoves a sadhu. How liberating and thoughtful this etiquette is!

I have heard that one night, when everyone was attending to Acharya Maharaj, somebody knocked down a bottle of oil The oil spilled out, since the bottle was uncorked. The attendants were a little disconcerted, but Acharya Maharaj continued to smile. Next morning, after the rite of veneration of the Acharya, he recalled the incident and observed. See just as you need to cork a bottle to keep its valuable contents from spilling, you must use the instrument of reprimand (stern discipline) to ensure that a disciple does not become self-willed and stray from the path of salvation. Acharya Maharaj had made use of a banal incident that of the knocking down of a bottle, to deliver this profound sermon. This is his forte! To cork/to reprimand – There is a subtle word play here on the Hindi wames daat (cork) and daant (reprimand).
