एक हाथ में कुम्भ ले कर,
एक हाथ में लिये कंकर से
कुम्भ को बजा-बजा कर
जब देखने लगा वह...
कुम्भ ने कहा विस्मय के स्वर में-
“क्या अग्नि-परीक्षा के बाद भी
कोई परीक्षा-परख शेष है, अभी ?
करो, करो परीक्षा!
पर को परख रहे हो
अपने को तो...परखो जरा!
परीक्षा लो अपनी अब!
बजा-बजा कर देख लो स्वयं को,
कौन-सा स्वर उभरता है वहाँ
सुनो उसे अपने कानों से!
काक का प्रलाप है,
क्या गधे का पंचम आलाप ?
परीक्षक बनने से पूर्व
परीक्षा में पास होना अनिवार्य है,
अन्यथा
उपहास का पात्र बनेगा वह।”
इस पर सेवक ने कहा शालीनता से-
‘‘यह सच है कि
तुमने अग्नि-परीक्षा दी है,
परन्तु
अग्नि ने जो परीक्षा ली है तुम्हारी
वह कहाँ तक सही है,
यह निर्णय
तुम्हारी परीक्षा के बिना सम्भव नहीं है।
यानी,
Holding up the pitcher into one hand,
When he starts examining the pitcher,
Sounding it carefully once and again
With a pebble caught into the other hand...
The pitcher speaks out with a note of surprise-
“ Despite the fiery ordeal
Does any more test and inspection still remain ?
Take, take the test !
You are examining the others
Examine...a bit of yourself, indeed!
Take your own test now!
Sounding yourself carefully, have a check-up of your own ‘self”, What voice springs up there -
Listen to it with your own ears !
Is it the absurd crowing of a crow Or
A donkey's outcry in its fifth tone ?
It is compulsory to pass the examination,
Before becoming an examiner,
Otherwise
The one shall make himself a laughing stock."
Hearing this, the attendant replies with courtesy -
“It's true, that
You appear at the fire-test,
But
The test which is furnished to you by the fire,
Is proper upto what extent -
This judgment
Isn't possible without putting you to test.
