कुम्भ का आशय विदित हुआ अग्नि को
लो, मुख मुदित हुआ कुम्भकार का!
शिल्पी के मुख पर, पूर्ण खुल कर
निराशा की रेखा, आशा-विश्वास में
पूरी तरह बदल कर
आलसी नहीं, निरालसी लसी।
लो, देखते-ही-देखते
सुर-सुराती सुलगती गई अग्नि
समूचे अवा को अपने चपेट में लेती
छोटी-बड़ी सारी लकड़ियों को
अपने पेट में समेट लेती!
अषाढ़ी घनी गरजती
भीतिदा मेघ घटायें-सी
कज्जल-काली धूम की गोलियाँ
अविकल उगलने लगा अवा।
अवा के चारों ओर
लगभग तीस-चालीस गज क्षेत्र
प्रकाश से शून्य हो गया...सो
ऐसा प्रतीत होने लगा, कि
तमप्रभा महामही ही
कहीं विशुद्धतम तम को
ऊपर प्रेषित कर रही हो !
धूमिल-क्षोभिल क्षेत्र से
बाहर आ देखा शिल्पी ने,
अवा दिखा ही नहीं उसे
इतनी भयावह यहाँ की स्थिति है बाहरी
फिर, भीतरी क्या पूछो!
पूरा-का-पूरा अवा धूम से भर उठा
तीव्र गति से धूम घूम रहा है अवा में
The fire comes to know the purpose of the pitcher
Lo, the face of the Potter-artisan looks delighted!
Having manifested itself fully
And being transformed completely Into the sense of hope and faith, The mark of despair on the face of the Artisan Brightens as active, and not indolent.
Lo, within the winking of the eye,
The fire goes ablaze with a crackling sound
While encircling the whole of the Kiln
within its stretch And
gathering up all the tiny and big logs Inside its belly!
The kiln spits out entirely
The bullets of lamp-black smoke,
like the dense, thundering, frightful –
Cloudiness in the month of Āsādha.
Around the kiln
A circular space of about thirty or forty yards
Became devoid of light...so
It appeared, as if
The darkish huge hellish stratus
Is somewhere spreading out
The stark darkness over and above itself!
The Artisan peeps out through
The smoky insurgent zone,
The very kiln is sighted nowhere -
So horrible is the prevailing external situation there
Then, what mention of the internal one !
The entire kiln is filled with smoke
The smoke is whirling around wildly into the kiln.-
